The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday finds us pausing to reflect on the countless blessings in our lives. At Luminocity, we’re particularly thankful for the opportunity to illuminate your homes and add a touch of warmth and magic to your spaces. But beyond our work, we’re deeply thankful for these seven things this season:

1. We’re thankful for the gift of family and friends

There’s nothing quite like the love and support of family and friends. Their presence in our lives brings joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging. When you trust Luminocity for your outdoor lighting, you can trust that we’ll treat you like a friend. Our staff has invested countless hours to become the most knowledgeable about what makes landscape lighting work. Let us create something special for you.

    2. Giving thanks for the blessing of good hHealth

Good health is often taken for granted until it’s challenged. We’re thankful for the ability to move freely, think clearly, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Did you know that landscape lighting can help you stay safe around your home, especially during these upcoming winter months when you might not notice a slick coating on your entryway? Plus, a well-lit yard lets you walk with confidence, without worrying about tripping in the dark.

    3. Grateful for the beauty of our community

Noblesville, Indiana, is more than just a place to live; it’s a community. We’re grateful for the friendly faces, the vibrant events, and the strong sense of community spirit that makes this city so special. Looking for some unique holiday gifts? Take your list to downtown Noblesville to check out the shops and galleries.

    4. We’re thankful for the wonders of nature

The changing seasons, the breathtaking landscapes, and the wildlife that surrounds us are a constant reminder of the beauty and power of nature. Here in Central Indiana, many of us are blessed to live on picturesque property with incredible natural elements. Luminocity can help highlight those natural resources without overpowering your yard. Park and walkway lighting, as well as tree and shrub lighting, enhance the natural beauty of your landscape. And if the weather outside gets frightful, Luminocity will help the snow look delightful with a lighting system designed to work all year round.

    5. Giving thanks for the magic of light

We’re often asked if we install holiday lights, and the answer is no, we leave that task to companies who are focused on bringing the twinkling to your home for a month. But our landscape lights are intended to shine throughout the year. A thoughtful lighting design will add dimension as well as beauty to your home. By placing lights at different angles throughout your yard, Luminocity can create multiple layers and focal points for a dramatic nighttime effect.

    6. Let’s not forget our dedicated team

Our team is the heart and soul of Luminocity. We’re thankful for their hard work, creativity, and dedication to providing exceptional service to our customers.

    7. Thanks to you, our customer

We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our loyal customers. Your trust and confidence in us are truly appreciated. When you entrust your property to Luminocity, you can take comfort in knowing that we’ll design lighting that takes advantage of its beautiful features and puts your home in the light it deserves. We’ll take a walk around your home to find the hidden spots that are just waiting to be brought into the subtle and sophisticated lighting design. Each project is different, and we’ll tailor a custom exterior illumination solution to fit your individual needs.

As we gather with loved ones to celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s remember to express our gratitude for the many blessings in our lives. From all of us at Luminocity, Happy Thanksgiving!

20 Questions With Luminocity Owner Karl Lundberg https://getluminocity.com/20-questions-with-luminocity-owner-karl-lundberg/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 17:59:52 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2824 When you partner with Luminocity for your inspired outdoor lighting, you’re partnering with Karl Lundberg, our owner and leader. Karl, a former United States Marine, runs his company with military precision and a keen attention to detail. He takes individual lighting jobs personally, making sure each property receives a unique lighting configuration designed to show off its best features.

Karl is more than a lighting designer and company owner. He’s a father, husband, grandfather and proud Hamilton County resident. He’s also the owner of a rescue dog named Hachi who likes to shed (and shed and shed.) Read on for more Karl insights.

      Karl: The early days

      1. Where were you born? I was born in Olean, a small city in upstate New York.

      2. Where did you go to school? I grew up in a very rural area. I attended Portville Central School for kindergarten-12th grade. My graduating class totaled 115.

      3. What did you want to be when you grew up?  I had no idea.

      4. What was your favorite holiday when you were a kid? Christmas.

      5. If your mom was looking for you and couldn’t find you, where were you likely to be? At a buddy’s house.

      Karl: The Marine

      6. When did you join the Marines and how long did you serve? I joined the Marines in 1979 and served for just under 30 years.

      7. Did you have a favorite assignment or station while you were serving? Each assignment has its own special memory.  My initial duty station was in Okinawa, Japan. I was a platoon commander of 35 young Marines. We trained hard and forged a tight bond.

My last assignment was at Camp Pendleton, California. I was activated from the Marine Corps Reserve after 9/11. Although I was trained as a combat engineer, I took over a logistics section. I wrote the order for how the equipment that was left behind at Camp Pendleton would be repaired and sent to the fight. It was inspiring to see the order implemented. The unit I was leading was responsible for providing desert uniforms for reserve units going to Iraq via Camp Pendleton, issuing security ammunition to Marine units going to the fight, handled hazardous waste, securing convalescent barracks for wounded Marines, and arranging for Angel flights for returning Marines to obtain flights home.

      8. What surprised you about being in the Marines? “Once a Marine, always a Marine” is true. The change is forever. I heard about this and thought that it was a slogan. Having lived it, I know it is true.

      9. What lessons from the Marines do you carry with you today?  You take responsibility for what you accomplish or fail to achieve.

      10. What was your favorite thing about being a Marine? Serving something larger than myself.  Serving one’s country via an elite fighting force requires sacrifice, but there isn’t a more nobler thing to do than serve one’s country.

      Karl: The outdoor lighting expert

      11. How and when did you get into the outdoor lighting business? I had always been interested in being an entrepreneur. Although I enjoyed my job as a director of marketing, it was time to make a change. I explored various options and was intrigued by outdoor lighting.  I learned about a franchise, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives, and decided to take the plunge. That was in 2005.

      12. What’s something people might not know about outdoor lighting? Using the right designer makes all the difference. You can use the best outdoor lights but if they aren’t used properly, the results won’t be very impressive. It is imperative to use the right color temperature, beam spread and lumen output to have the right look.

      13. What sort of certifications do you have, and why are those important? I am a Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer, Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician and mentor for the International Landscape Lighting Institute. This has exposed me to some of the best outdoor lighting designers in the world. It isn’t all that much different from other skilled occupations. If you need medical care, most likely you would expect that the best results will be from the one who has received the best training. The landscape lighting industry is mostly filled by people who have never had a minute of actual training. They just started putting lights in the ground and hoped for the best. The idea of doing a thoughtful design is foreign to many of them.

      14. Do you find yourself making mental lighting improvements to houses when you drive in the dark? I have become an outdoor lighting snob. Most landscape lighting isn’t done very well. That is because most guys that design and install lights have been self-taught. They don’t know any better and just wing it.

      15. What’s your most important rule of outdoor lighting? There isn’t just one. I always ask myself, “What is the focus of this composition?” When placing the fixtures I always consider where the person looking at the item illuminated will be viewing it. I always interview the homeowner to learn what is important to them.

      Karl: The man

      16. What’s your greatest accomplishment? I don’t know if there is just one. When I was 16, I rode a bicycle from Mexico to Canada. Becoming a Colonel in the Marine Corps is very special. I have summited the highest point in 44 states with my boys. (In case anyone is wondering, Hoosier Hill in East Central Indiana is the highest point in the state, at 1,257 feet above sea level.)

      17. What do you like to do on your days off? In my off time I like to read or work on projects around the house.

      18. What’s the smartest thing you ever did? Ask my wife to marry me.

      19. Dogs or cats? We have a rescue dog named Hachi. He is a smart dog and did very well at dog school. I don’t know who learned more – Hachi or me. Unfortunately, he sheds and sheds and…

      20. What is still on your bucket list? There are still many National Parks I have yet to visit.

Are you looking for extraordinary landscape lighting? Trust your home to a man who has invested the time and knowledge to understand what it truly takes to showcase a property. Reach out to Luminocity now for your free consultation. While you’re at it, feel free to ask Karl about that bicycle trip from Mexico to Canada!

Architectural Insights: How the Right Lighting Can Illuminate Your Home’s Features https://getluminocity.com/illuminate-your-homes-architectural-features/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:43:14 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2817 Enhance Your Home’s Curb Appeal with Expert Landscape Lighting

Your central Indiana’s home’s architectural features are a testament to its unique style and character. But what if you could showcase these features even more dramatically? The answer lies in professional landscape lighting by the trained professional lighting team at Luminocity. With the right design and placement, outdoor lighting can transform your home into a captivating nighttime spectacle.

      Highlighting key architectural elements

When the architect designed your home, he or she included several elements that were intended to evoke a certain response or emotional appeal. Taken as a whole, you might not notice the intricate combination of artistic details. But with proper outdoor lighting, your eye will be drawn to the details that let your home stand out in the neighborhood.

Luminocity’s staff has invested many hours in education to ensure that you get the best design for your money. As home to two of only five Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technicians (CLVLT) in Indiana, as well as the only Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD), we can offer unparalleled expertise. For instance, we’ll work to highlight specific architectural areas of your home with the right fixtures and lighting:

      • Facade lighting: Draw attention to your home’s exterior with soft, warm lighting that highlights its intricate details. Uplighting can accentuate architectural features such as columns, arches, and cornices.
      • Window lighting: Create a welcoming ambiance by illuminating your windows with subtle, downward-facing lights. This can add depth and dimension to your home’s facade.
      • Path and walkway lighting: Guide visitors safely through your property while creating a charming atmosphere. Path lights and bollards can be strategically placed to highlight walkways and garden features.
      • Tree and shrub Lighting: Enhance the natural beauty of your landscape by illuminating trees and shrubs with uplighting or spotlights. This can create dramatic shadows and add a touch of mystery.

Choosing the right architectural lighting techniques

Luminocity believes that good outdoor lighting goes beyond installing a few fixtures around the house. We believe in paying attention to the finer details, doing things right the first time and teasing out the small elements that make a dramatic impact. Our team works with outdoor lighting professionals around the United States to understand the different techniques that contribute to the final illuminated product:

      • Uplighting: This technique directs light upward, creating a dramatic effect and highlighting architectural features.
      • Downlighting: Downlights cast light downward, providing a soft and inviting ambiance.
      • Wash lighting: This technique uses wide-angle fixtures to create a uniform wash of light across surfaces.

A professional outdoor lighting expert will use a combination of these techniques to create intentional shadows and contrasts upon your home’s exterior. Consequently, you’ll see your home in a new light as its unique architectural features take on a starring role.

      Benefits of professional landscape lighting

Are you tempted to drive to the nearest big box store and make your home lighting design a DIY project? We try to warn our customers before they sink their money into a project that may not see a strong return on investment. A professional landscape lighting designer pays you back with one-of-a-kind designs and lighting insights that keep your home beautiful. You may enjoy other advantages as well:

      • Increased home value: Well-designed landscape lighting can significantly enhance your home’s curb appeal and increase its resale value.
      • Enhanced safety: Outdoor lighting can deter crime and make your property safer for both you and your guests.
      • Improved mood: The soft glow of outdoor lights can create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.
      • Energy efficiency: Modern LED lighting technology offers energy-efficient solutions that reduce your environmental impact.

Fall for It: 5 Reasons Why You Need Outdoor Landscape Lighting this Autumn https://getluminocity.com/fall-for-it-5-reasons-to-add-landscape-lighting/ Tue, 20 Aug 2024 19:08:20 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2805

As summer winds down, Indiana is already preparing for the colder months. You’ve probably noticed that our days are slowly getting shorter—by mid-September, we’ll no longer see daylight after 8 pm. Don’t be afraid of the dark, though. Luminocity stands ready to light up your surroundings with a professional outdoor landscape lighting plan. Fall is the perfect time to install outdoor lighting. Your foliage isn’t new and fragile like it was in the spring months, and outdoor lighting can brighten your home when the leaves are gone and we’re living in the endless gray period known as winter in Indiana. Read on for five great reasons why you should consider outdoor landscape lighting this fall.

      Extend your outdoor entertaining options

Have you opened your windows at night yet? Fall in Indiana often means a stretch of comfortable temperatures where you’re neither wilting in the heat or bundling up to stay warm. While central Indiana usually sees its first frost in late October, we still have plenty of time for outdoor activities. Whether you’re trying to squeeze a few more weeks out of your pool or you’re looking for extra room to congregate during a dinner party, outdoor lighting can increase your gathering space. Or, if you’re more of an introvert, you can simply unwind outdoors in the gentle glow of landscape lights to enjoy a quiet evening.

      Enhance your fall foliage

Fall foliage is a breathtaking natural spectacle.  But have you ever considered how much more stunning it can be with the right lighting? Outdoor lighting can accentuate the vibrant colors of your trees, creating a mesmerizing display that will leave your neighbors envious. Imagine the golden hues of your maple trees dancing in the soft light – it’s a truly enchanting sight. Luminocity can create a magical lighting design through selective use of uplighting and downlighting, letting your home and landscape be the star of the show.

      Improve safety and security

As the days get shorter, safety becomes an increasing concern. Outdoor lighting can help deter intruders by illuminating potential hiding spots. Additionally, well-lit pathways and steps can prevent accidents, ensuring the safety of your family and guests. Did you know that falling is one of the most common injuries that can occur at home? Walkway lights can help illuminate pathways and stairs that might otherwise be trip hazards. Plus they’ll come in handy in a couple of months when the ghosts and goblins are traipsing up your walkway to collect something sweet.

Increase your home’s curb appeal and value

Put yourself in the shoes of a potential homebuyer. Would you prefer the home that sits in darkness, or the one that is thoughtfully lit to accent its best features and create its own masterpiece? Outdoor lighting can be a valuable investment that may significantly increase your home’s resale value. Even if you plan to stay put, think of outdoor lighting as an investment in your own comfort and happiness.

Give your existing lighting a fall makeover

Fall in Indiana is often a busy time for homeowners, who are harvesting the bounty in the gardens they planted last spring and cleaning the gutters in preparation for torrential fall rainstorms. It’s also a good time to spiff up your existing lighting system in time for the winter months, when you prefer to enjoy your outdoor lighting through the windows of your warm home. Luminocity recommends that homeowners turn off their circuit breakers and clean the lighting fixtures with mild soapy water to remove water deposits, dirt and debris. Want to avoid this messy task? Talk to Luminocity about our maintenance plan, which keeps your system operating a peak efficiency month after month. Our maintenance plan covers a thorough cleaning and inspection of your entire outdoor lighting system. We’ll check the timer, prune overgrown foliage, and replace any burned out bulbs. It’s a great investment in your home’s beauty.

Who else is ready for fall? Don’t sentence your home to a winter of cold and darkness. Put it in lights with an inspired lighting design by Luminocity. Remember, Luminocity not only installs new lighting systems, but we’ll also work to maintain and enhance any existing lighting system you might have. Call us now at 317-537-8055 to schedule a consultation and find out what Luminocity can do for you this fall!

Maintenance Plans: 6 Bright Reasons for Investing in One https://getluminocity.com/maintenance-plans-6-reasons-for-investing/ Tue, 25 Jul 2023 19:54:56 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2615 You’ve invested in a state-of-the-art outdoor lighting system, and your house looks stunning. But Mother Nature is a worthy foe. Throughout the year, your outdoor lighting system may endure heavy rains or freezing ice storms. The halogen bulbs can become damaged or dim. Foliage and shrubbery can grow and block the lighting design. Wires can become exposed over time. Regular maintenance is important, especially with a sophisticated electrical system. That’s why you should consider purchasing the maintenance plan from Luminocity. Keep your hands clean and the lights on!

We’ll make sure the system is in good working order

Electronics are best left to the experts, who understand the importance of proper wattages and circuit loads. One bad connection can ruin the overall ambiance of your lighting design. Our Luminocity staff has extensive industry experience and training. As members of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals, we’ve learned how to cover the smallest details to ensure that your system is working at its highest capacity. We’ll also check the timing system and reset it as needed, so the lights turn on when you want them.

      New replacement bulbs

Replacing outdoor lighting bulbs is not like screwing in a new lightbulb in your office lamp. This is a potentially time-consuming and dirty task. When your Luminocity crew comes by for regular maintenance, you’ll also enjoy pristine new lightbulbs to keep your home and yard beautifully lit throughout the year.

Doing your dirty work during the maintenance call

Speaking of dirty, the annual maintenance plan also covers things like burying exposed wires and trimming bushes and other shrubbery that can dim or distort the outdoor light. Over time, bugs and other debris can accumulate in your outdoor light fixtures. Do you really want to be the one to remove the lens and blow out the crud? Don’t worry – we’ve got it covered during our maintenance visit.  Did your landscaper knock over a few lights this summer? We’ll straighten things out and let you know if it’s time to replace a fixture. If a fixture is under warranty, we’ll work to replace it according to the warranty terms and save you money.

Bringing your home back into the right light

Every outdoor lighting design requires regular adjustments. A focal point tree is going to keep growing, and the original set-up may no longer put it in its best light. Nearby plants and foliage are organic materials and mature over time. The annual maintenance visit also gives us a chance to review your original lighting design and suggest improvements you may not even know you needed.

We’ll take care of your existing lighting system – even if we didn’t install it

If you purchase a house with an existing lighting system, you may not know who to call on for regular maintenance. Luckily, Luminocity’s maintenance plan extends to systems we didn’t install as well as those we did. We’ll take care of your regular maintenance needs, and we may even be able to recommend upgrades that bring an added lighting advantage to your home.

The maintenance plan can save you money over time

Your dad knew what he was talking about when he told you that sometimes you need to spend a little money to save money. Regular maintenance not only helps your outdoor lighting system look its best, it may also extend its overall life expectancy. Something as simple as removing built-up hard water deposits can make a difference in outdoor fixture longevity, but you must know how to do it without compromising the equipment. That’s why you rely on Luminocity.

The days are already getting shorter, and we’re going to be back to colder weather and darker evenings before you know it. Talk to us now about regular outdoor lighting maintenance, and find out if the maintenance plan is right for you. Your home deserves to shine. Call us at 317-537-8055 to schedule an appointment.

      What’s the Difference Between Uplighting and Downlighting? https://getluminocity.com/uplighting-and-downlighting/ Sun, 13 Nov 2022 17:46:54 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2538
Uplighting and downlighting can combine for a dramatic statement.

When you hire a professional lighting company like Luminocity, you’re hiring experts who know how to combine different lighting techniques that maximize your home’s beauty unique features. Inspired outdoor lighting is more than just a few flood lights aimed at your home. It’s a combination of different fixtures strategically placed to transform your home into an illuminated work of art. We rely on both uplighting and downlighting to create intersecting shadows and designs. What’s the difference between uplighting and downlighting? Read on.

      Uplighting and downlighting

As their names suggest, uplighting and downlighting refer to direction. When we talk about uplighting, we’re talking about lights that are mounted at or near ground level, directing their beams upward. Downlighting refers to lights that are mounted above the target, shining down on your home and illuminating the area below.

When you light your home with Luminocity, you won’t feel like you’re sitting in an arena. Instead, your eyes will be drawn to specific points on your home. Done right, a combination of uplighting and downlighting will elevate your home into a class of its own.

      Uplighting advantages

Uplighting is a great way to highlight trees and other natural resources on your property. Uplighting draws the eye up and emphasizes the textures and shape of the tree, whether you’re looking at snow-covered branches in the winter or a splendid leaf canopy during the summer. We might use uplighting to create unique or dramatic shadows that play over the textures and surfaces of your home and its surroundings. We often install uplighting at regular intervals around your home’s exterior, creating an orderly yet artistic experience.

      Downlighting advantages

Downlighting creates the warm illumination that bids you welcome as you approach the home. We like to use downlighting to highlight specific parts of your home and yard, including entrances and landscape bedding. Because the lights are hidden, you don’t feel like you’re in the spotlight when you venture outside. Instead, you feel like you’re walking in an artistic masterpiece.

The art and science of lighting

Exterior home lighting enhances your home’s ambiance and adds an extra layer of security. Little details have major implications, which is why an inspired outdoor lighting company like Luminocity is your ticket to a tasteful and sophisticated tableau that you can’t get from a big box hardware store. When you work with Luminocity, you’re working with certified low-voltage lighting technicians who understand how light can emphasize your home without overwhelming it.

A well-lit home makes you feel like you’re walking into a warm hug on a cold winter evening. If you’re ready to illuminate your greatest investment, call Luminocity now at (317) 537-8055 or contact us online.

      4 Outdoor Lighting Maintenance Tips for Fall https://getluminocity.com/4-outdoor-lighting-maintenance-tips-for-fall/ Tue, 27 Sep 2022 19:05:51 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2515
      Maintenance Tips for Fall

Fall is here in Central Indiana, and with it comes the shift toward shorter days and cooler temperatures. You know what that means: it’s time to prepare your outdoor lighting system for the cold months ahead! Whether you’re planning on using your outdoor space year-round or just want to preserve it for next summer, Luminocity has you covered with our 4 maintenance tips for fall to keep your outdoor lighting system shining all season long.

      1. Clear away leaves and tree limbs

It’s important to clear leaves and tree limbs off your outdoor lighting system on a regular basis. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging your lights and leaving your home in the dark. Fortunately, it’s easy to do this yourself. First, be sure to turn off the circuit breaker to your outdoor lighting system. Next, use a leaf blower or broom to clear away any leaves or debris. Then, turn on your outdoor lights and enjoy your well-lit home!

      2. Clean off outdoor lighting fixtures

Over the course of the year, dirt and grime can build up on your outdoor lighting fixtures which can cause them to lose some of their brightness. As we transition into a new season, now is the perfect time to clean your outdoor lighting fixtures. First, head back to the circuit breaker of your outdoor lighting system and turn it off.  Then, use warm water and mild soap to clean off all fixtures. A quick clean will have your outdoor lighting system shining brightly again!

      3. Reset your system timer

If you have an automatic timer for your outdoor lighting system, now is the time to reset it for the fall. With the sun setting earlier every day and daylight savings time ending on November 6, you’ll want to make sure your lights are turning on and off at the right times. Resetting your lighting system timer is easy and only takes a few minutes. Simply find your timer, consult the owner’s manual, and make the necessary adjustments. Done! Once your timer is updated, you can rest assured that your outdoor lighting system will be ready for the shorter days and longer nights of autumn.

      4. Invest in our Annual Maintenance Plan

Fall maintenance doesn’t have to be a headache. With Luminocity’s Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP), we’ll take care of all outdoor lighting maintenance for you! When we perform an AMP on your quartz-halogen system we replace all bulbs with fresh ones. Our Luminocity outdoor lighting experts will inspect and clean every fixture, bury exposed wires, and trim bushes to achieve an optimal lighting effect. We will also check your system timer and reset as needed. When it comes to keeping your system operating at peak efficiency month after month, our AMP is your best value.

If you are in need of a new outdoor lighting system or would like to update your existing system, the lighting experts at Luminocity would love to assist you. Schedule your professional consult with the Luminocity team online or at 317-537-8055. We’d love to keep your system running smoothly all fall long!

What are the certifications of an outdoor lighting expert? https://getluminocity.com/outdoor-lighting-expert/ Wed, 31 Aug 2022 13:33:46 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2508

When you need outdoor lighting services, you want someone who has been specifically trained and licensed to take on this important task. However, throughout the United States, there are no clearly defined national standards for an outdoor lighting expert. In fact, in most states, the test given to license outdoor lighting technicians has little or nothing to do with the actual work they perform. So, what clearly identifies a professional from others in the industry? Take a look at these important certifications.

      AOLP Certification

Luminocity has been serving Central Indiana since 2010 with hundreds of installations under our belt, and more importantly, hundreds of happy customers. How can you find a trusted outdoor lighting expert like the techs at Luminocity? Look for someone with certification from the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP).

Established in 2001, the purpose of AOLP is to advance the outdoor lighting industry and support technicians by establishing professional ethics and standards of business. If an individual or company wants to be recognized as an outdoor lighting expert, they can become an AOLP Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician (CLVLT) and/or Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD).

Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician (CLVLT)

AOLP administers a CLVLT exam to measure the outdoor lighting knowledge and capabilities of applicants. The test consists of six sections that include both written and hands-on components. Upon receiving a passing grade, applicants are listed as Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technicians. This certification must be renewed every two years.

      Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD)

When it comes to outdoor lighting, there are no set rules to memorize. However, there are a series of fundamental principles that are universally acknowledged to form the basis of “good and responsible” design. AOLP offers a one-year COLD program to help technicians develop this discipline, requiring them to analyze their work in peer group settings and through in-depth subject matter. Outdoor Lighting Facts vs. Myths https://getluminocity.com/outdoor-lighting-facts-vs-myths/ Tue, 19 Jul 2022 13:58:21 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2472
      outdoor lighting facts vs. myths

Outdoor lighting is transformative. It enhances the look of your home and yard, makes it easier to get around at night, and can even make your property more secure. But there are also some outdoor lighting facts vs. myths that might make you think twice before installing new lights yourself or hiring a landscaper to do it for you. Luminocity takes a “myth busters” approach to separate the facts from fiction when working with our professional installers.

Myth: Outdoor lighting costs too much money

Many times, homeowners assume that the cost of an outdoor lighting system will be too expensive. Yes, the initial cost can be considerably higher than what you might purchase from a big box store. However, long-term LED outdoor lighting costs 1/5 of what traditional halogen lighting or other systems use. With savings over time and increased safety and security in your home or business, it’s well worth the investment!

Myth: Outdoor lighting takes too much time

It typically takes half of a day to a full day for outdoor lighting technicians to install a fully functional lighting system for both the front and back of most homes. Even better is that trusted, proven crews can work at your home while you manage your work and free time, so you don’t have to sit around at home and wait for them to install your system.

Myth: Anyone can buy and install outdoor lighting from a big box store and get the same results

Yes, as a homeowner you can get your outdoor lighting cheaper from a big box store. But there’s a catch: odds are you may not know how to install them properly. Sure, you could go online and attempt to figure it out, but is this always better? Do you want to be responsible for troubleshooting problems with your own system like a trained professional would? To this myth, we say – no way!

Myth: Landscapers can install the same lighting system for less money

While it is true that landscapers may be able to install the same lighting system for less money, it may not be worth saving a few hundred bucks upfront only to have to pay more in the long run due to the decreased lifespan of the materials themselves. All systems require regular maintenance and inspection checks throughout their lifespan. With the Luminocity Annual Maintenance Plan, we will inspect and clean each fixture and take care of any minor service needs for no extra charge.

Myth: All outdoor lighting companies are the same

Outdoor lighting companies are not all created equal. There are dozens of installers who care more about making a quick buck than providing a high-quality system. Typically, these installers are uninsured, inexperienced and sloppy regarding design and installation. How do you know which company is right for you? A top-rated outdoor lighting company like Luminocity is one that takes pride in making your home look amazing. They don’t cut corners. Rather, they use safe, high-quality fixtures and create outstanding designs based on your home’s needs.

Outdoor lighting is a wonderful way to make your home more beautiful and secure. We hope sharing our expert insights has helped you better understand the outdoor lighting facts vs. myths. Lights to Accentuate Your Outdoor Living Space: Hanging vs. Ground https://getluminocity.com/hanging-lights-vs-ground-lights/ Fri, 24 Jun 2022 17:54:31 +0000 https://getluminocity.com/?p=2463
      Lights

Summer is here, which means many Indiana families are spending more time outdoors at night. Whether you’re hosting a backyard party or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars, it’s important to prepare your home with outdoor lights this summer. As Central Indiana’s go-to outdoor lighting experts, we know that the right lighting fixtures are essential for creating a breathtaking effect. So, here is Luminocity’s guide for accentuating your outdoor living space using two of the most popular outdoor lighting fixtures: hanging and ground lights.

Choosing the right outdoor lighting fixture

At Luminocity, every design begins with careful consideration as to which features of the home and landscaping should be accented with lighting and which areas should remain dark. From there, we help you select fixtures based on the desired lighting effect. These can include hanging and ground lights or a mixture of both.

      Hanging lights

Hanging lights provide a welcoming feel to your outdoor space while highlighting any prominent landscaping or architectural features. There are three main types: pendants, chandeliers and lanterns. Light strands, track lighting and ceiling fans can also be classified as hanging fixtures.

      Pendants

Pendants are the most common type of hanging fixture, for both indoor and outdoor use. The fixture consists of a bowl-shaped shade suspended from a rod or chain that is secured to the ceiling. When installed correctly outdoors, pendants can serve to highlight special landscaping and architectural features such as trees, shrubs, fountains or sculptures.

      Chandeliers

Chandeliers are a form of pendant lighting as they hang from a rod or chain. However, unlike pendant fixtures, which typically contain only one bulb, chandeliers have multiple bulbs situated on a single fixture. Once considered too fancy for outdoor areas, chandeliers are now a popular lighting option for a wide range of outdoor spaces. They are perfect for illuminating covered decks, patios and gazebos. Smaller chandeliers can even be hung from tree branches to create a unique look.

      Lanterns

Outdoor lantern fixtures come in two types: hanging lanterns and wall-mounted lanterns. Hanging lanterns are great for marking gates, entryways, paths and walkways. They can even be designed to hang from poles or columns for a dynamic effect. Wall-mounted lanterns, on the other hand, are typically used on exterior walls, near decks and patios, and along fence lines. Wall-mounted lanterns are beautiful in design, making them a great visual element for your outdoor living space.

      Ground lights

Ground lighting extends your time outdoors while highlighting the natural architectural beauty of your home. By illuminating your property, ground lights can increase safety for your guests and make your backyard a much more usable space. There are four main types: spotlights, bollard, flood lights and step lighting.

      Spotlights

“Spotlight” is a general term for any outdoor lighting fixture that points in one direction. These typically range in terms of brightness and the amount of area they cover. Spotlights can be used to highlight statues, plants, walls and patios– just about anything you can point them at!

      Bollard Lights

Bollard lights are posts that stick into the ground with lights on top. These fixtures do not have a light shield or cover. They are useful as they are one of the only types of outdoor landscape lighting that can shine in every direction.

      Flood Lights

Flood lights are spotlights with high brightness and a wide range of coverage. They are the most useful types of outdoor lighting fixture when it comes to illuminating large areas, such as driveways or patios from above.

      Step Lighting

You guessed it. Step lighting goes either on walls beside the stairs or on the front, vertical face. They help to prevent slips, trips and falls in the dark by illuminating your patio or deck stairs.

Now that you are more familiar with hanging and ground lighting, along with their various types and functions, you can begin planning your next outdoor lighting project for the summer! Luminocity has been helping our Central Indiana neighbors accentuate their outdoor living spaces for over 10 years. Call us for a design consultation at (317) 537-8055 or visit us online.
